DOLBY ATMOS
Dolby Atmos is a 9.1 surround sound system including 128 tracks and up to 118 simultaneous sound objects. What makes the system so unique is that it has speakers placed above the audience allowing film makers to create a 3D space for a more immersive experience compared to other surround sound systems such as 7.1 and 5.1 as sound will only travel on a horizontal plane. This allows film audio engineers to be more creative in the way that they mix sounds for films. For example, a jet can fly over the audience and separate explosions or other sound effects can be used on the left and right channels meaning that Atmos provides a more extensive amount of space and options for mixing.
Atmos has also been used for music however it rare to find as the equipment needed is expensive limiting the audience that would be able to hear the music as it was mixed. Deadmau5 is one of the very few artists that own a Dolby Atmos sound system installed within his home studio.
